Case #23
White's Chapel Cemetery
August 6th, 2006

White's Chapel United Methodist ChurchThis was the 3rd and final cemetery on Hoosier Paranormal’s cemetery run. It is located in the northern part of the county near Spraytown.

Many residents from this area will know this to be the final resting place of a witch named Martha. This is a local legend that dates back several years. In fact one of our groups founders, Shanon, had even been there as a teenager. The legend of Martha’s grave says that if you locate the grave and then urinate on it you will have a wreck on your way home. Personally, Hoosier Paranormal has no idea why someone would desecrate a grave like that but we did manage to locate and speak with a couple of people who had been there and done that. Both of these people were involved in accidents on the way home from the graveyard. Legend also says that you can see the image of Martha burned into the side of the gravestone.

Once again it was a dark night with little or no moon. Investigators present were Shanon, Kenny, Randy, Greg, and Robert. Equipment used was digital cameras and voice recorders and Sony Nightshot cameras. Total time spent here is around an hour.

White's Chapel has a different feel to it as you enter. It seems to be a dark place that tends to give you cold chills. Many of the graves are unkept and overrun with weeds. I don’t believe there to be any recent burials there. During our investigation we were never able to locate the original grave of Martha and we had no personal experiences except for the uneasy feelings. Towards the end of the investigation Randy noted that he had a large amount of battery drain on his camcorder.

Findings: We did locate a grave marker of Martha. It is a newer marker probably around 10 years old. It also has her husband next to her and his name is George. We are not 100% sure that this is Martha the witch but after many years of vandals and such it would be possible the original has been replaced. Both George and Martha died around the turn of the century. We did manage to capture an EVP. While Shanon and Randy are standing at the grave site of Martha and George, Shanon ask a question, “are you here with us George”? Just after that a whisper can be heard saying, “I can hear you”. It is only a minute or so after that when Randy notices his camcorder has been drained.

Conclusion: Hoosier Paranormal believes that White's Chapel Cemetery and Martha’s Grave to be an active place for spirits. Eyewitness accounts, personal feelings, equipment failure, and our EVP all add it up. We will return and maybe next time Martha will have something to say.
