| History The Nelson County Jail was constructed in 1819 and used until 1987 when it was sold to a private party and turned into the Jailers Inn B&B and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. There were 6 cells in the front of the building that have now been remodeled into bedrooms with 22 inch thick limestone walls. The jail also had 4 more cells located on the backside of the building including a drunk tank and a female only cell. There was also a gallows built in the courtyard area of the jail where public hangings took place until 1926. It is also known that Frank & Jesse James were in the area of Bardstown in the mid to late 1860’s and sought shelter at the jail because the local Sheriff’s wife was a cousin of the James clan, just goes to show that blood is thicker than water. For more information on Jailer's Inn, visit their website here. Reports Over the years there have
been numerous reports of voices, shadows, footsteps, and unexplained
noises occurring primarily in the upstairs cells by guest and
employees. Some of these have been recorded into log books located in
each of the rooms.

Bill, Robert and Shanon were present on this night and started out by taking a tour of the property with the innkeeper Paul. During this time we were shown all the converted jail cells, old jail cells, courtyard, and the dirt cellar where there is an old underground cave system running under the property. A voice recorder was left down there for about 3 hours and it definitely felt very creepy down there. After the tour concluded we began setting up our equipment going lights out at 10:15pm. We had 3 DVR cameras set up in the upstairs bedrooms along with voice recorders for each room, we also had a camera set up in the lower foyer area, in the library room, and one back in the old jail cell areas. Each of those were accompanied by a voice recorder. Our 1st EVP session began in the 1819 room upstairs and was overall very quiet, as was most of our evening. Throughout the 10 hr. investigation we covered all areas of the building and even spent some time out in the courtyard where the gallows would have been located. All thru the night we heard a lot of unexplained noises from the tapping of glasses to the sounds of chimes, Shanon was even touched on the leg in the 1819 room around 3:30am. The voice recorder located in the dirt cellar recorded a strange sound of footsteps walking across a wooden floor however the area directly located above the cellar is concrete not wooden. Other recorders picked up on the sounds we had been hearing during the night but no EVP’s were recorded on this night. Video evidence revealed nothing but some cool dust orbs. Conclusion On this night HPR did not record evidence of any paranormal activity and had a few personal experiences. Based on our evidence and the given history of the property HPR believes a follow up investigation will be done sometime in the future. |
